Chiaroscuro-(from Italian chiaro, “light,” and scuro, “dark”), technique employed in the visual arts to represent light and shadow as they define three-dimensional objects. Popularised in the late 15th century by artists including Leonardo Da Vinci

These photographs of the same window scene show the contrast of the light and shadow, the darkness that frames the images imbues the light to emphasise the garden scene with the mid-tones being limited to the side of the curtain and the flowers in front of the window sill.
