4- Martha Schwartz

 Martha Swartz- Jacob Jarvits Plaza

I like the colour use of lime green in contrast with sleek dark grey. The seating is interesting to look at, though front-eye level height may not be as interesting. The flow of the seating is interesting and eye-catching to follow. The planted mounds add an interesting change in level and provide points of interest.

I don't like the space in which it's used, it prioritizes a personal design project over the practical use of space in a city. New York space is limited, so the space is not well utilised, it would benefit people more if there was more planting, and some shade/shelter. There are many ways to use the current design and make it better.

I appreciate that Martha Shwartz's designs have been enlightening for the landscape architecture community, it's fun, it's playful, it's unique and rare. But to me, it lacks real purpose. Space, especially in the public realm is for the people and this design lacks the function and enjoyable for people who would use a space in a busy urban area like New York.
